William Earl Maxwell, one of the co-authors, was born in 1935 in Lovelady, Texas. He grew up on a cattle ranch and cotton farm in the heart of East Texas. After graduating high school, he pursued undergraduate and graduate studies at Sam Houston State University. Maxwell served in the United States Army in the 49th Armored Division, where he commanded a tank platoon. He is a professor emeritus at San Antonio College, where he taught courses in U.S. and Texas Government.
